Steven Gerrard expects Rangers to announce signing before Alashkert clash

Steven Gerrard has hinted at a new signing for Rangers ahead of their Europa League clash against Alashkert on Thursday night.

Rangers crashing out of the Champions League led to speculation that the club may have to part ways with a big name or two to balance the books.

However, last night, The Scottish Sun reported that they were back in for Huddersfield Town midfielder Juninho Bacuna, and now Sun journalist Alan Nixon has said the deal is at an advanced stage.

Without naming names, Gerrard said in his press conference, as quoted by The Daily Record, “The progress is really good, it’s strong. I’m hoping to have some news in the coming days, but until it’s done and dusted it’s very hard to give you an exact time and date.

“I’m hoping for more positive news in the coming hours, maybe some time tomorrow.

“But it is an area where, come the end of the season after the amount and volume of games, we felt we were short at times. We did ask Glen Kamara, Steven Davis and Joe Aribo to go above and beyond, and they did that.”

Has to be Bacuna?

The fact that he’s mentioned all three midfielders suggests that it’s got to be one in that area of the pitch and Bacuna seems to be on his way to the Ibrox this summer.

The 24-year-old Dutch-born Curacao international has been on the club’s radar since last October, when Nixon himself reported the interest, and it now seems to have gone to an advanced level where we’re very close to getting an announcement.

He’s scored 11 and assisted nine over the last two seasons which suggests he’s not someone who enjoys playing 50 yards away from goal but actually likes to get in the box, make things happen and find the back of the net himself.

His arrival would add much-needed depth in the area we’ve been lacking in for a number of months.

John Lundstram was a welcome arrival, but Bacuna’s addition will benefit the squad a great deal as well.

He won’t be participating in our Europa League clash, but we’re hoping to see him in action very soon.
