Rangers want Oostende centre-back Jack Hendry
Rangers are in the mix for Oostende centre-back Jack Hendry as they plot a possible summer move, according to 90min.
The 26-year-old Scotland international joined the Belgian outfit for under £2million earlier in the summer after impressing on loan while he was still a Celtic player.
Hendry has a low release clause under £5million, and that has attracted Rangers alongside Torino and a host of Premier League clubs, with Oostende ready to quickly cash in if an offer is made.
Smart move?
Hendry joined Celtic in January 2018, with then manager Brendan Rodgers praising the 6ft 3in centre-back for being “super quick and a good one v one defender” [BBC].
Having made just 27 appearances for the Hoops, spending 2019-20 on loan at Melbourne City and last season in Belgium, the former Dundee ace is not likely to regard himself as being Celtic through and through.
Hendry has managed to resurrect his career at Oostende after a failed stint at Parkhead and could be very much open to joining Rangers just to spite the Hoops.
With Niko Katic very much likely to leave on loan this summer and the future of Connor Goldson still unresolved, we reckon Steven Gerrard’s side could do with another centre-back this summer.
Our defence has not been particularly convincing this season, and landing a quality addition like Hendry could be huge.
Former Celtic star Davie Provan recently said of the centre-back in his Scottish Sun column: “Where he was lightweight when signing for Brendan Rodgers, he’s added half a stone of muscle to look like a proper centre-back”
“Wolves are among a number of clubs known to be interested in him and so too should Scotland boss Steve Clarke. We don’t have many defenders with the distribution of Hendry.”
Rangers could gain from Celtic’s loss by snapping up a player that gave up on, and that would be an interesting move if it materialises.
