Kieran Maguire: Sale of big name not essential for Rangers

Rangers will not be compelled into parting ways with one of their prized assets after the Champions League exit, claims Kieran Maguire.

The Champions League loss to Malmo meant Rangers suffering a £40million shortfall due to the lack of revenue the competition would bring.

It led to many believing that the club had to sell someone for big money to sustain this season, but Maguire claims that is not the case.

Speaking to This Is Ibrox, the football finance expert said, “They are probably now in a position where a sale would help but is not essential, and I’d really like to stress that.

“Whilst the directors are continuing to be willing to put money into the club then everything is fine. But these guys, eventually they’re going to turn round and say if it’s costing us £10-£15million a season, what are we getting out of this?

“Rangers could go on and win the Europa League then we’d need to reconsider everything, but in terms of group stage, we’re probably talking a minimum of £20million, and that’s a good night out in Glasgow.”

Hope everyone stays

Three bad games shouldn’t derail the plans that have been in action since Steven Gerrard walked through the door at the Ibrox.

One can see the changes he’s brought about at the club, not just in terms of results, but the culture and our image overseas.

We’re also signing decent players and successfully managing to hold on to names that have been heavily linked with a move away from the club.

Rangers

All this is down to the fact that everyone at Ibrox believes in what’s happening both on and off the pitch and another year of no Champions League football will not change that.

Hopefully, we find a way not to weaken our squad drastically this summer and give it our best shot to win the Europa League.

Also, if we win the league again this season then we’ll have secured direct qualification into the Champions League group stages next year which is certainly what we’re aiming for.
