Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson has been criticised by a new report

Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson has been slammed for his recent transfer business by a new report from the Guardian.

The article produced by Ewan Murray tries to pinpoint what has gone wrong with the Gers this season, and he lays into Wilson for the transfer business he has conducted.

The Gers have so far added John Lundstram and Fashion Sakala to the first-team squad. However, Murray believes that the Gers have failed to add signings who will regularly challenge for first-team places and thus, the squad has gone a bit stale.

Rangers

Murray said: “It reflects on Ross Wilson, the sporting director, as much if not more than on Gerrard, that from a position of strength Rangers have not made many signings that affect their starting XI.

“There is much to be said for stability but Rangers have recently largely signed players who lurk on the fringes.

“John Lundstram, who arrived from Sheffield United with considerable hype this summer, was consigned to the bench for Malmö’s visit after some dismal displays. It is almost as if he moved to Rangers from a team who collected 23 points in last season’s Premier League.

“Fashion Sakala, signed from Oostende, did at least appear in the latter stages and looked lively.

Does Wilson deserve criticism?

If you look at the Gers’ starting XI against Malmo Allan McGregor, Connor Goldson, Borna Barisic, and Scott Arfield were signed in 2018. Joe Aribo, Steven Davis, and Ryan Kent were signed in 2019. Only Scott Wright was signed in February 2021.

So it seems as if Steven Gerrard has to rely on players who have been at the club for a while, and that is both good and bad because it allows for continuity, but if those players aren’t performing, who comes in?

Rangers

Lundstram started the match on the bench after a poor display against Dundee United, while an arguably unfit Alfredo Morelos started ahead of both Cedric Itten and Sakala.

Of course, Morelos scored, but the fact that he started after playing no pre-season games suggests that Gerrard isn’t that convinced by Wilson’s signings in recent windows.

Now, the season is still very young, and we would be surprised if the Gers didn’t turn their start around, but you do have to question Wilson and his role in building and improving Gerrard’s squad.

In other Rangers news, the club might be forced to sell one of their star players after Champions League exit.
