Rangers may sell Borna Barisic amid interest from Roma

Rangers could part ways with Borna Barisic after getting knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers, claims Gabriel Antoniazzi.

Gers’ defeat to Malmo is likely to coincide with them selling some of their prized assets this summer.

In January 2020, Steven Gerrard confirmed that there was interest from Roma, but was clear that the Croatian left-back was not for sale. [The Times]

Antoniazzi, who is a journalist and presenter of PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show, believes that the Italians still hold an interest and Barisic could be one of the players the defending Scottish champions will sell this month.

“A nearly £40million windfall has slipped through their [Rangers] fingers,” he said.

“The club could sell one of their prized assets to make up the difference.

“Borna Barisic has been linked with a move to Roma over the last 12 months and aged 28, the Gers may look to sell the Croatian for a profit having bought up for £2million three years ago.”

Dicey

Given our tricky situation, it’s hard to say which players will stay and which ones will leave, but Barisic may well be one Gerrard could look to move on this summer.

We’re aware that the manager is a fan of the player and has labelled him “outstanding” a couple of years ago [The Scottish Sun], but he understands the finances that go into running a football club.

Rangers

The Croatian is 28 and has three years left on his deal. If the club are looking to make a profit from his sale, they could decide to offload him in the coming weeks.

Transfermarkt values him at £5.4million, but we could look to drive up his price if other clubs are put on high alert once they learn his transfer status.

Football Insider reported a couple of months ago, that Premier League trio Aston Villa, Wolves and Arsenal are keen on signing the 28-year-old and if we’re smart enough we could drive a bidding war for his services.

We may have to enter the market for a replacement ourselves, but he will be comparatively cheaper and possibly a longer-term fix as Barisic is anyway going to be needing replacing in the next two or three seasons.
