Davie Provan claims Alfredo Morelos wants Rangers exit this summer
Rangers have missed out on Champions League football this season after Tuesday’s defeat to Malmo, and Davie Provan thinks Alfredo Morelos wants out.
The Colombian opened the scoring against the Swedes as Steven Gerrard’s men attempted to mount a comeback after losing the first leg 2-1.
However, Rangers ended up with another defeat in front of their fans and will now attempt to qualify for the group stages of the Europa League.
Provan reckons failure to qualify for Europe’s elite competition could see Morelos leave Ibrox this summer, telling Go Radio: “He wants out. He’s said he wants to play in a bigger league and with Rangers out of the Champions League – I don’t see what’s there for Morelos to stimulate him now.
“He’s won the league title in Scotland. I think if Rangers had qualified for the group stages of the Champions League then that might have been attractive enough for him to go again.
“I’m not sure there is enough here to motivate him and he’s already on record, saying that he wants to play in a bigger league. It would also make sense, for me, for Rangers to take some money. All they’ve been doing is shelling out on players.”
Tough blow
Losing home and away to Malmo is a bitter pill to swallow.
It was our best chance to advance to the play-offs and secure a place in the group stages of the Champions League for the first time in a decade.
With Rangers 1-0 up and level on aggregate against the 10-man visitors heading into the second-half, nobody could have seen that defeat coming, and there are going to be consequences financially.
While we wish we could prevent it, cashing in on one or two players is all but guaranteed.
With Champions League money gone, our only source of bolstering the coffers is through sales, and selling a player who wants out is best for both parties.
While most Rangers players have taken a social media break as the disappointment of Tuesday continues to hurt, Morelos has wasted no time to upload the clip of his goal.
He wants suitors to know what he is capable of, and his goal is more important to him despite our loss.
The Colombian decided not to sacrifice his extended holiday for an early return in order to play the first-leg, and he clearly does not care how the fans feel as long as he scored and got the attention of his suitors.
Morelos wants out, and we should not hesitate to cash in.
