Simon Jordan shares verdict on Rangers-SPFL sponsorship row

Simon Jordan has leapt to the defence of Rangers on talkSPORT as their sponsorship row with the SPFL continues.

Trouble has been brewing in Scotland after the SPFL took issue with the Gers not displaying cinch on their shirts or at Ibrox, with the Light Blues pointing to page 113, rule 17.1 on ‘Commercial Contracts, Broadcasting and Transmission’ in the SPFL rule book as justification for supposedly flouting league rules.

Speaking via talkSPORT on Tuesday [10/08/21], ex-Crystal Palace chairman said: “It’s being puffed up into a PR battle to have a go at Rangers because they have a commercial deal that’s based upon their chairman’s business.”

Jim White responded: “Is this not one club threatening the whole league’s sponsorship? This is like Manchester United in the Premier League going to the league saying “we’re not showing any Barclays sponsorship around the pitch because we’re with HBSC. The principle is the same thing.”

Jordan: “Rangers have a commercial deal that will be compromised and they will be in breach of their obligations under that deal, so if the SPFL have done a deal, they surely had to know that the two major parts to the deal that needed to be delivered, in Rangers and Celtic, were deliverable.

“They’re not right on a lot of things Rangers but this is not right and the way they are getting spun on this one is not right. This is about competency and the SPFL boys are not good enough I’m afraid.”

Sense

Rangers don’t find much sympathy in the media, something alluded to by Jordan himself who suggests the Gers have themselves to blame in many scenarios.

He’s been a tough critic of the club for a number of years, but even he has acknowledged that there are agendas being served here.

As a former owner of a Premier League club, Jordan is well-versed in the behind-the-scenes dealings in football and the fine-print of contracts.

It seems obvious even to those not well entrenched in football, but it’s good to have someone with some insider knowledge of football at boardroom level fighting our corner as well.

Despite everything appearing pretty lear-cut on our end, this saga could still drag on for a while yet if the SPFL refuse to admit the errors of their way.

In other Rangers news, a high-ranking official has made a request to their Premiership rivals as the seven-figure row takes a new twist.
