Ally McCoist: Rangers could compete in Europe with level financial playing field

Ally McCoist believes that given a level financial playing field, both Rangers and Celtic could compete with the top European clubs.

Speaking to talkSPORT after the Gers’ defeat to Malmo in the Champions League, the former Rangers striker passionately defended both the Gers and the Bhoys.

He believes that the difference between Rangers and Celtic struggling to compete in Europe is the difference in finances available to the Premier League clubs, compared to the SPFL.

He said: “It’s just totally incomparable.

“Given a level playing field, Rangers and Celtic would do very, very well down south, of that; I have absolutely no doubt.

“The fact of the matter is they can’t compare or compete at that level because of finances.”

McCoist is bang on!

Both the Gers and Celtic are huge clubs; however, they received just under £6million combined in TV money for the 2019/20 season [Sportekz].

On the other hand, Burnley received a staggering £127million in TV money for the same season, despite having a small ground and a pretty unsuccessful history [Planet Football].

So, that shows the difference between the SPFL and the Premier League and until that gap narrows, you would think both the Gers and Celtic could struggle in Europe.

Rangers

However, that is still no excuse for not beating a side from the Swedish division who were down to ten men.

That is on Steven Gerrard and the players and has nothing to do with the finances available to the Gers.

Rangers were poor and have not only missed out on a potential financial boost but also the chance to feature in the group stages of Europe’s premier competition for the first time since the 2010/11 season.
