Michael Stewart: Rangers may have to sell stars to balance the books after Malmo defeat

Michael Stewart fears Rangers may be set to make some tough decision in the transfer market after Tuesday night’s harrowing defeat to Malmo.

The Gers crashed out of the Champions League after a 2-1 defeat at Ibrox condemned them to a 4-2 loss on aggregate against the Swedish side.

Writing via his personal Twitter profile in the immediate aftermath of the game, BBC pundit Stewart has suggested that the Light Blues may have to sell some senior stars to balance the books.

He said: “Champions League money isn’t coming into Ibrox and surely that’ll mean they need to sell players to try and balance this year’s accounts, which will obviously have an impact on the team on the pitch.”

Stars to be sold?

The defeat is still raw after only being a matter of hours old, but the fallout of our Champions League exit is set to continue at an alarming rate over the next few days and weeks.

It remains to be seen, but there appears a good chance that some players will now be more tempted to leave Ibrox now that we have been relegated to the Europa League.

Perhaps the player most at threat is Alfredo Morelos, who has been constantly linked with Porto this summer. Will this be the final straw for him? Will Glen Kamara now be tempted in a move to the Premier League?

The vultures are likely to start circling after Tuesday’s Ibrox disappointment, and we could be left to rue the loss for some time.

It was a crushing defeat, and we only have ourselves to blame after surrendering a one-goal lead against ten-men.
