Jordan Campbell not allowed into Rangers press conference after loss v Malmo

The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell has revealed that he is no longer attending press conferences at Rangers.

The Scottish champions have controversially started to charge media organisations for media access and it seems The Athletic have refused to pay up for Campbell to attend press conferences.

Campbell was completely blocked from attending a game back in February before in April, the Sunday Post had to apologise to readers for their lack of coverage on Rangers due to being declined interviews.

After the 2-1 defeat to Malmo on Tuesday night, Campbell was asked in a Q&A on The Athletic website whether he’d ask difficult questions at the post-match press conference.

However, the journalist replied: “No press conference for me I’m afraid Derek. Only official media partners and broadcaster partners allowed in to press room this season.”

This isn’t right

Rangers have now decided they are going to vet who is and who isn’t allowed access to the club from the media.

And while most fans would be happy with this, it’s a really bad thing to do and it sets a really dangerous precedent.

If people are paying for access, do you think they’re really going to try and push the buttons of the likes of Gerrard when the going gets tough? Will they hold people to account about certain things?

Or will they be more worried about losing access and losing the money they’ve paid for that access and ask easy questions to Stevie G, the players and the board – if they ever get that kind of access?

Did anyone really see any big questions get thrown at Gerrard after the disastrous performance against Malmo? We didn’t. Not really.

That’s because some of the best journalists out there are being shut out of the club only for them to have happy clappers in place.

Yes, some will ask tough questions but they’ll always be scared of losing the club’s trust and being shut out in the future.

This isn’t right and it’s also incredibly boring to hear the same old rubbish coming out of the club.
