Ally McCoist blasts ‘Nonsense’ suggestion Steven Gerrard should be sacked at Rangers
Ally McCoist has delivered his verdict after a Rangers fan called for Steven Gerrard to be sacked after Tuesday’s shock defeat against Malmo at Ibrox.
Rangers lost 2-1 to their Swedish counterparts on the night and 4-2 on aggregate as they were relegated from the Champions League to the Europa League.
A Rangers fan rang up the talkSPORT‘s ‘The Sports Bar’ programme after the game and said: “He’s got to go. Look what’s happened, we’ve fallen apart against ten men, how many trophies has he had a chance at and he won that one during COVID. As soon as fans are back that team crumbles.”

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie O’Hara burst out laughing, while the clip was played to Ibrox hero McCoist on talkSPORT Breakfast [11/08/21].
“That’s slightly harsh isn’t it, no,” he said. “It’s been a disappointing start for Rangers but you’d like to think Gerrard and the team will turn it around.
“It’s poor but hopefully they can get a run in the Europa League now.
“The caller is talking absolute nonsense about people losing their job.
“It’s a shaky start but as Gerrard says, it would be crazy to start pressing panic buttons at this stage.”

Emotions are high
Last night’s defeat was a painful one to take and the Rangers fan who called for Gerrard’s head was surely just speaking in the heat of the moment. He surely cannot want him to be sacked now.
Yes, Gerrard is not perfect, something that has been obvious in the past week after three losses in a row, with a defeat to Dundee United on Saturday sandwiched between the Malmo ties.
But we cannot forget he was the man who masterminded an unbeaten 38-game Premiership campaign last season to wrestle our crown back as Scotland’s top team.
He has much to learn, but there is no one else we’d rather have in charge of this team.
In Gerrard we trust.
In other Rangers news, a BBC pundit has suggested that Light Blues stars are set to exit Ibrox as the club looks to balance their books.
