SPFL ask SFA to intervene as Rangers sponsorship battle intensifies

The SPFL have asked the SFA to run the rule over their sponsorship battle with Rangers as fears grow that their £8million prize pot could be withdrawn, according to the Daily Mail.

There has been an argument brewing between the league and Rangers after the Premiership champions refused to display cinch sponsorship on their kit or at Ibrox.

The Gers believe they are exempt under rule i7 of the SPFL handbook, leading SPFL chairman Murdoch MacLennan to send an email to all member clubs informing them of the threat to their payout.

The 4th Official has delivered an interesting update via Patreon [09/08/21], writing: “MacLennan in his letter asks the clubs to call him as once the process of arbitration starts, they would be bound by confidentiality.

“I asked my source at that club what it means, and he told me, ”they want other clubs to be parties in the arbitration.”

Getting serious

The SPFL have drafted in the SFA and it looks like this is a battle which is set to heat up considerably over the next few days, weeks and most likely, months.

The two parties in question have made their stance on the matter very clear – Rangers believe there is a clear clause that allows them to ditch the cinch sponsorship while the SPFL are adamant the Gers have agreed to abide by the rules they have set out, that cinch sponsorship must be on display on shirts and at stadiums.

It’s hard to see how this one will be settled any time soon – there could be a lengthy legal wrangle to find out who will come out on top, if anyone.

Rangers are no strangers to fighting a battle with the hierarchy and are sure to pull out all the stops to prove their point.

We will have to wait and see how this one unfolds, but don’t expect a swift resolution.
