Michael Stewart blasts ‘Embarrassing’ Connor Goldson in Rangers v Malmo
Michael Stewart blasted Rangers defender Connor Goldson for his role in getting Bonke Innocent sent off for Malmo on Tuesday night as the Gers lost 2-1 again in their Champions League qualifier.
Malmo were reduced to 10 men on the brink of half-time at Ibrox when Innocent was shown a second yellow card for a challenge on Goldson.
Both players appeared to lunge in towards the ball with their studs up but Goldson was the one who was left in a heap on the floor.
BBC pundit Stewart has slammed the decision and tore into Goldson for going down.
“That is never a second yellow card in a month of Sundays,” said Stewart via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday night.
“Goldson is the one who catches Innocent but even that was nothing.
” For Goldson to go down is embarrassing.”
Let’s not be biased for a moment
Stewart is right. Like him or loathe him, the former Hibs and Hearts man is spot on here.
If that was the other way around, we would be absolutely furious and calling whichever player it was a cheat and a conman.
Goldson was not hurt at all and went into that challenge exactly the same as Innocent did yet because the Gers defender went down to the ground crying in agony, he’s caused the referee to send an opponent off.
Referees need to do a better job, let’s be clear. We see it time and time again when referees base their decisions on the reaction of other players.
It is likely that Goldson knew that Innocent was on a booking and went into that challenge knowing he could draw a foul.
He just had to add the finishing touch to get the referee to send the Malmo player off.
Goldson should be ashamed of that and Steven Gerrard needs to have a word with the defender because we really don’t like seeing that.
He’s cheated, to be blunt.
But fair play to Malmo. They raced out of the blocks after half-time and made us look absolutely useless again – but this time with 10 men.
In other Rangers news, Stewart sent an out-of-character message to the Gers ahead of the clash with Malmo.
