Shelley Kerr slams John Lundstram after Rangers defeat v Dundee United

BBC Sportscene pundit Shelley Kerr slammed John Lundstram for his role in Dundee United’s winner against Rangers on Saturday.

Steven Gerrard’s men saw their unbeaten run in the league end at Tannadice as Jamie Robson’s second-half strike settled the Gers’ second Premiership fixture of the season.

Former Scotland Women manager Kerr feels the goal was definitely avoidable and she was less than pleased with Lundstram’s failure to follow Robson’s run into the box before he scored.

“Take nothing away from him for the goal but I think here, Rangers could do a lot better,” said Kerr on BBC Sportscene on Saturday night, via BBC iPlayer.

“I know often, managers tell you to show inside but I think here, James Tavernier should show him the outside because it’s such a big gap.

“And then you look at Lundstram. He should actually track the runner.”

Awful defending

Lundstram has only just arrived at Ibrox but he really hasn’t given a good first impression based on his performance at Tannadice on Saturday.

It was such a simple piece of defending too as he got drawn towards the ball and failed to follow Robson, who started to run off him.

As you can see in the image above, Lundstram, who has the circle underneath him, is running horizontally across the pitch while Robson is pointing ahead of him and making a dart towards the penalty area.

Lundstram may have felt Tavernier was following him but the right-back is already a couple of yards behind the Dundee United ace.

It simply wasn’t good enough but we can’t completely pile the blame on Lundstram.

Gerrard got it wrong with the shape of his team.

His full-backs didn’t really get the chance to push forward as much because the central midfielders went out wide and that really stifled the ability to get good balls into the box.

We dominated possession but in terms of quality chances, there were next to none.

It really isn’t great preparation for a must-win Champions League qualifier against Malmo next week.
