Kris Boyd tips Kemar Roofe to be Rangers main man this season

Kris Boyd has tipped Kemar Roofe to be Rangers main man this season after what he noticed him do during the 3-0 win against Livingston last week.

The 28-year-old striker came off the bench to score the third goal of the game as the Light Blues kicked off their Scottish Premiership title defence in style.

Roofe missed the midweek Malmo Champions League game through suspension and will also sit out next week’s return leg for the same reason.

Rangers

Boyd believes the Englishman has what it takes to become a key player for Steven Gerrard’s side this season after showing his natural goalscoring instincts last weekend.

“Rangers were already 2-0 up against ten-man Livingston, it was stoppage time with the match all but over,” the Sky Sports pundit told The Scottish Sun.

“Roofe, though, showed me he was desperate to hit the net before the final whistle and I loved that. It wasn’t a spectacular goal. The ball was just bouncing around when he reacted to get it over the line.

“But there and then I thought to myself how he could be the main man for my old club this season.”

Great player

Roofe is a top player and the result would have been different had he featured for us in Sweden on Tuesday.

Being unavailable for next Tuesday crucial clash is a big blow, and Rangers really could do with a fit version of the former Leeds United star this season and going forward.

Injuries limited him to just 13 Premiership starts last season, and he came off the bench six times.

Nevertheless, he did manage to grab 10 goals and two assists.

He also scored twice in seven Europa League games last term, with that goal from his own half still fresh in our minds.

Rangers

Roofe is capable of the spectacular and having him available all season would come as a huge boost to our chances of retaining the title.

The league champions at the end of the 2021-22 season will qualify automatically for the group stages of the Champions League in 2022-23, and we definitely need to win it.

Rangers have a top player on their hands, but injuries robbed us of seeing him truly shine last season.

He has hit the ground running in the new campaign, and long may it continue.
