Michael Ball: Gary Cahill would be a fantastic signing for Rangers
Michael Ball has urged Rangers to bring English centre-back Gary Cahill to Ibrox this summer if both parties can agree to a financial package.
The 35-year-old is a free agent after his Crystal Palace deal expired, and The Sun journalist Alan Nixon claimed last month that the Scottish champions are keeping tabs on him and could give him £35,000 a week.
Ball believes Steven Gerrard’s side could do with the services of the veteran centre-back in their hunt for glory this season, telling them to swoop.
“Gary Cahill’s Premier League experience is second to none,” the former Light Blues left-back told Football Transfer Tavern.
“What he would bring to Rangers, in terms of his experience, would be fantastic.
“It’s just a case of whether the financial package will be suitable for both parties.”
Huge player
Rangers need quality and depth at the back this season to have any chance of playing in the Champions League and competing strongly across the three domestic competitions.
With Leon Balogun injured, Filip Helander did not particularly impress playing alongside Connor Goldson at the back against Malmo last night.
The lack of fierce competition for playing opportunities at the back brings about some level of complacency, and we cannot afford that if we want to impress this term.
Signing Cahill will keep all Rangers centre-backs on their toes as they know he is guaranteed a starting berth anytime he is available.
Despite his age, the former Chelsea star was a key player for Palace over the last two seasons.
Having gone last term without losing a single Premiership game, it cannot be denied that we have the best defence in the land.
However, we need an upgrade to succeed in Europe this season, and it could have been a different story last night against Malmo had Cahill been at the back for us.
His wages could prove to be a stumbling block, though, but we have to pay top dollar if we want to pit ourselves against the big boys in Europe.
