Kris Boyd predicts big season for Kemar Roofe at Rangers
Kemar Roofe came off the bench to grab the third goal for Rangers in the 3-0 win over Livingston today, and Kris Boyd is predicting a big season for the Englishman.
The 28-year-old started the new Scottish Premiership season as a substitute, replacing Fashion Sakala on the 70th minute.
Roofe pounced on a mix-up at the back from the visitors to register his name on the score sheet, and Boyd believes the forward is going to play a key role for Steven Gerrard’s side this term if he gets to play regularly.
The former Rangers star said on Sky Sports after the game: “You’re probably looking to create a bit more. Rangers had a lot of the ball but didn’t get in behind much. But first day of the season, there is going to be rustiness.
“It’s a clean sheet, three points, and Steven Gerrard will be delighted.
“I think it’ll be a big season for Kemar Roofe. If he can get a run, I think he is that X-factor in that central position for Rangers. Morelos has been really good, but I think Roofe can take it up a level.”
Absolutely
Roofe has everything it takes to make a huge difference for us this season, and he only needs to become more consistent and prove to the boss that he deserves to be one of the first names on the team sheet.
The former Leeds United striker featured in 19 Premiership games last term, starting 13 and scoring 10 and making two assists.
Roofe started four Europa League games and came off the bench thrice, grabbing two goals – including the wonder strike from inside his own half that has since emerged as the longest-range goal ever scored in the history of the competition.
The Rangers ace is capable of the spectacular every now and then, but we really need him to do more.
He is unavailable for selection for the Champions League third-round qualifying and the play-offs should we advance as a result of a four-game ban picked up for his reckless tackle on Slavia Prague goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar last season.
Being without Roofe for those games is a big miss for us given what he is capable of doing on his day, and we can only hope his absence does not prove costly in our bid to qualify for the group stages.
Roofe still has a lot to prove in the Light Blues shirt, and this season could be when he announces himself to the Ibrox audience in grand style.
