Alex McLeish reacts to Rangers start of Fashion Sakala
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has predicted that Rangers forward Fashion Sakala still has a lot to prove after his goal against Real Madrid.
The Ibrox speedster opened his account for the club in the 2-1 win, scoring in front of the fans with a cool finish after good work from Glen Kamara.
McLeish insisted that Scottish teams won’t play a high-line as Madrid did, and Sakala must prepare to play differently when needed.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “The Belgian League was always good for strikers breaking through.
“Sakala looks like he wants to play on the shoulder, but every team won’t play high against Rangers, they’ll sit deep and absorb, that’s when we have to find out about his technical ability.
“That remains to be seen, but what a good start.”
Sakala may have been given the freedom of Ibrox to run in behind against Madrid, but he took advantage of that perfectly.
When teams sit deep and absorb pressure, you need someone to run the channels consistently, and the striker may just be that man.
Scottish teams are physical, that is a given, and if Sakala can cope with that, he should score goals for fun in the Premiership.
McLeish is right to fire this warning, but as he mentions, Belgium is a great spot to pluck strikers from who are ready for that next level.
Sakala could be the next to make a name for himself after making that move, something we are all hoping happens, starting tomorrow against Livingston.
