Alex McLeish: Rangers could sell attacker after Cedric Itten breakout
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has predicted that Rangers may have to sell one of their strikers after pre-season was concluded.
Steven Gerrard has numerous options available to him at Ibrox, with Cedric Itten the big winner of the past month.
McLeish believes that with Fashion Sakala, Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe also available, one of the attackers may be forced to leave.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “Itten was a grower.
“Now, if he can maintain the scoring record then the competition is going to be amazing, and dare I say it, one of them could move on.
“They have an awful lot of players, and may need to balance the books.”
Itten has been phenomenal throughout pre-season and even scored the winner against Real Madrid last weekend.
Jermain Defoe is also added to those options, but his injury may somewhat slightly ease the headache coming into the season opener with Livingston.
Morelos will also miss the game, and it could open the door to Itten to cement his spot after a poor campaign last season.
The Swiss forward scored only four goals in his 23 appearances and will be wanting to hit double figures if he can this time around to prove himself.
Morelos will be back after the first leg against Malmo next week, and if Itten doesn’t make an impact when it matters, he could find himself instantly back on the bench.
