Ipswich Town not pursuing Rangers winger Jordan Jones despite recent speculation
Ipswich Town are not in the hunt to sign 26-year-old Rangers winger Jordan Jones, according to the East Anglian Daily Times.
The Suffolk-based newspaper claims the English League One club have no designs on pursuing a move for the Northern Ireland international.
Online news outlet Football League World reported earlier on Wednesday [28/07/21] that the 1981 UEFA Cup winners had joined the race to sign Jones, with Steven Gerrard set to green-light his Ibrox exit, but that claim has been swiftly put to bed by the local Ipswich press.
Looking for suitors
Well, it appears that Ipswich can be crossed off the list of possible destinations for Jones this summer.
The 2019 signing from Kilmarnock looks certain to depart Rangers this summer after falling way down the pecking order under Gerrard, especially since his seven-game ban for a COVID breach alongside George Edmundson last year [BBC].
He was subsequently shipped out on loan to Sunderland in the English third-tier in January, and he impressed as his three goals helped the Black Cats to the League One play-offs, where they were outsmarted by Lincoln City.
His exploits down the wing for them and at Kilmarnock will surely land him a club at a decent level, maybe even in the English Championship, but a move to Ipswich looks to be off the table.
Jones’ Rangers contract does not expire until 2023 [Transfermarkt] but he’s surely not keen to waste away the peak years of his career by sitting in these stands or on the bench at Ibrox.
That’s where he will be this season if he stays after failing to shine in 19 appearances under Gerrard since his 2019 move.
The likes of Ryan Kent, Ianis Hagi and Scott Wright are well ahead of him in the pecking order, and a move away would suit all parties.
In other Rangers news, a journalist has branded the Gers ‘Small-time’ after this reported Ibrox development.
