Telegraph journalist slams ‘Small-time’ Rangers after press demands

Scottish-based journalist Stefan Bienkowski has criticised Rangers after reports emerged that the club plan to charge newspapers £25,000 for press access.

It’s something that has been in the pipeline for some time, but the news gained more traction on Monday after Magnus Linklater’s column in the Times.

He called the idea “arrogant” and took numerous shots at the Gers over their position.

Rangers

Responding to the article via his personal Twitter profile on Monday [26/07/21], Bienkowski seemed to concur with his industry colleague.

He wrote” “Heard about this from colleagues covering Scottish football this season. It’s preposterous but, honestly, perfectly in line with where Scottish football is going. Most clubs in this country – it isn’t just Rangers – have the most neurotic and small-time approach to the media.”

Bad press but the club don’t care

If Rangers wanted to be high up in the popularity rating the club wouldn’t be making this move, but they probably feel that it’s reached the point where they don’t care.

There has been a consistent feeling among fans and figures at the club that the Gers are not being treated with the respect that should be shown to them as one of Europe’s most prestigious clubs.

Plenty has been made about the breakdown in relationship and communication between the two sides, but it appears to be at an all-time low now, and chances of recovery look slim.

The club appears to have made their mark in a bid to lay down foundations for the future and regain a sense of ‘control’.

It’s an extremely controversial move, but perhaps one born out of exasperation.

It will be interesting to see if any other clubs take the same route.

In other Rangers news, this European club chief claims he has issued a Scottish authority demand after Gers incident in March.
