Report: Rangers defender George Edmundson set to join Ipswich Town for £1m

Rangers are set to benefit financially from George Edmundson’s proposed sale to Ipswich Town, according to The Daily Record.

The 23-year-old will finalise his £1million move to the League One club with the Gers set to receive more should Ipswich seal promotion.

Ipswich Town are confident that the centre-back will put pen to paper to a deal at the club after holding positive talks with him recently.

According to East Anglian Times, he’s already agreed personal terms with them and is in line for a medical before an official announcement can be made.

Edmunsdon spent last season out on loan at Derby County, and despite the Rams wanting to sign him this summer, they could only afford to bring him in on loan due to their tricky financial situation.

Having paid £800,000 to sign him in 2019 from Oldham Athletic, Rangers are in line to make a profit off his sale two years down the line.

Good business

Recouping what we paid for the Englishman was the most important thing of this deal, and a profit with a future sum is the cherry on the cake.

Edmundson was unlikely to change Steven Gerrard’s mind, despite the Gers boss being impressed with him in the past.

The 23-year-old has only two years left on his deal at the Ibrox, so demanding a higher fee, especially from a team in England’s third tier would not have been realistic, and we should be delighted with the terms of this transfer.

Derby’s interest may have tempted the player, but it’s good that we did not entertain the idea of loaning him out and are in line for a decent transfer fee from his imminent departure from the club.
