Alex McLeish reacts as Rangers attendances rise at Ibrox

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has expressed his joy at seeing more Rangers fans back at Ibrox after allocation numbers continue to be relaxed.

There was frustration when the Gers were only allowed to hold 2,000 for the Arsenal friendly on July 17, but that rose to 8,500 for the visit of Brighton the following week.

After the Premier League duo came the glamour tie with Real Madrid on Sunday [25/07/21], and 12,750 fans were in attendance at Ibrox to watch Steven Gerrard’s side beat the Spanish giants 2-1.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish has suggested it will raise the level of performances from players even further.

“Goodness knows how excited those fans were,” McLeish said.

“The fact that they’re getting back in there in numbers…we know over the last year or so the lack of fans has affected some teams, in fact, a lot of teams.

“There’s nothing like hearing the roar of your fans in your own stadium and in top competitions that is also massive.

“It’s fantastic news for everybody.

“The fact they can experience crowds again, I’m sure it always gives an adrenaline rush when you hear the roar and the motivation is there to play your best.”

Rangers have now concluded their pre-season friendly schedule and will begin their official 2021/22 campaign on Saturday, July 31.

Ibrox will host the visit of Livingston and there is a further boost with the news that numbers will rise to 17,000 for the Scottish Premiership opener [Daily Record].

Despite relatively small numbers Ibrox has been electric for the pre-season games, and the noise level is only set to soar further when the league campaign gets underway.

In other Rangers news, this player is to be unveiled at his 21/22 club this week after the Gers inserted a significant clause.
