Darragh MacAnthony: Peterborough no longer want Rangers defender George Edmundson

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has confirmed the English Championship club are no longer interested in Rangers defender George Edmundson.

Edmundson, 23, spent the second half of last season on loan at Derby County as they avoided relegation from England’s second-tier and it remains to be seen what the future holds for him at Ibrox.

Last month, the Daily Record reported that Peterborough had made Edmundson a “top summer target” but the Gers were not interested in a sale.

Writing via his personal Twitter account on Sunday, MacAnthony suggested that the Posh were interested in Edmundson but are no longer keen.

Responding to a question about interest in Edmundson, the Peterborough chief said: “Not anymore no, Dougie. Cheers.”

Edmundson to stay?

We’re not sure why Rangers would want to keep Edmundson and it’s a shame that one of the clubs interested in him has backed out.

Can we see the 23-year-old getting any game-time with us next season? He might get the odd few minutes at the end of matches or start every now and then in cup fixtures.

However, Steven Gerrard has a whole host of other centre-backs who are far better and should be ahead of Edmundson in the pecking order.

Connor Goldson’s future needs clarifying but obviously he’s the first-choice centre-back with Filip Helander and Leon Balogun just behind him.

Nikola Katic has recovered from his serious knee injury and he’s bound to be in the mix despite missing a year of football.

Jack Simpson was only signed in January so he’s bound to be kept on despite some fans failing to rate the ex-Bournemouth man.

Edmundson is probably below all of those unless Gerrard is going to spring a surprise on us.

In other Rangers news, Derek McInnes claims this player’s agent could be working on a deal for him to quit Ibrox.
