Steven Gerrard reveals how close he was to leaving Rangers and taking the Everton job

Steven Gerrard has been speaking to ESPN about Rafael Benitez taking the Everton job, and he revealed that he would never leave Rangers to manage the Toffees.

As far as he is concerned, the Everton job is a “non-starter”, and the fact he was even linked with taking over from Carlo Ancelotti “shocked” the Gers boss.

Gerrard has been at Ibrox now for three years and has managed 170 competitive games, and his stock as a manager has grown significantly. So it was no surprise to see him linked with the Everton job, but he clearly thinks he will never manage the Toffees.

He said: “I was very shocked and surprised that my name was linked to the job. I don’t know where it came from, whether it was paper talk or if there was any truth in it, I’m not sure.

“[Managing Everton] is never a possibility as far as I’m concerned.”

Not leaving any time soon!

Gerrard is, of course, a Liverpool legend, so it is no real surprise to hear that he would never have left Ibrox to take that job.

However, given how well he has done with Rangers, it would be a surprise if other Premier League clubs weren’t looking at the 41-year-old and thinking about bringing him in at some point.

Gerrard doesn’t actually discuss his future with the Gers in this interview, but he has revealed in the past just how happy he is at Ibrox, which is a good sign [The Times].

However, what is clear from this interview is that he was never or ever will be close to taking the Everton job, so that is one less team that the Gers will have to worry about when trying to keep Gerrard in Glasgow.

Gerrard still has three years left on his contract at Ibrox, and it would be a surprise if he didn’t at least fulfil those as he seems very happy with the Gers.

In other Rangers news, the club could be prepared to sell two of their biggest players to raise money.
