Rangers manager Steven Gerrard reveals that contract talks with Connor Goldson are progressing

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has revealed that contract talks with Connor Goldson are progressing and that he is “confident” of securing a new deal for the centre-back.

Goldson only has a year left on his contract, and there had been talk that the Gers were willing to let the 28-year-old leave on a free next summer [The Athletic]. However, it appears as if that is not the case and talks seem to be progressing well for Goldson’s new deal.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion centre-back joined the Gers in 2018, and he has made 162 appearances for the club since then and played in every league game last season as Rangers only conceded 13 goals all season. So it is no wonder that Gerrard wants to keep him, and talks seem to be progressing [the Daily Record].

He said: “Talks are ongoing, and I’m confident we can get it to where we want to get it, but at the same time, we’ll respect Connor’s space and where he’s at.

“There’s no need to rush; we’ve got a strong personal relationship. His advisors are in touch with the club, and things are moving forward but hopefully sooner rather than later, we can get him tied down.”

Goldson to stay?

This is a very positive update from Gerrard, and it suggests that the centre-back will be committing his future to the Gers at some point.

It is clear that the 28-year-old has been a vital player for Gerrard and Rangers, and so it is really no surprise to hear that the 41-year-old wants Goldson’s new contract sorted out.

Gerrard is a huge fan of Goldson and described him as “outstanding” last season, and given that he was part of one of Europe’s meanest defences, you can’t really say that he doesn’t deserve a new deal [Rangers’ official Twitter page].

A new contract will also protect the Gers financially if another club comes in and tries to take Goldson from them at any point.

Therefore, this new contract makes sense for Goldson because he is a key player at Rangers. It makes sense for Gerrard because he is a big fan of the centre-back and clearly trusts him. It also makes sense for the Gers as they get to keep one of their best defenders and warn off any potential suitors.

So, hopefully, it is just a matter of time before this deal is completed.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have placed a significant clause into the contract of starlet set to go out on loan.
