Nikola Katic set on Rangers despite calls from other clubs
Nikola Katic is fully committed to playing for Rangers next season amid interest from other clubs, according to the Daily Record.
The newspaper has been told by a source close to the 24-year-old defender that he’s “very happy” at Ibrox and “calls from other clubs are not interesting at the moment”.
It is understood that American-owned Serie A club Spezia are one of the teams interested in the one-time Croatia international, who missed all of last season due to a serious knee injury.
Loan exit would suit everyone
Steven Gerrard has too many centre-backs at the moment.
Connor Goldson, Filip Helander and Leon Balogun were tremendous last season as the Gers conceded just 13 league goals all season and unless any of them leave, we’d expect them to be Gerrard’s first three centre-backs.
After them, you have Katic, George Edmundson and Jack Simpson.
Simpson only arrived in January so it’s unlikely that he’ll be going anywhere while Edmundson spent the second half of last season on loan at Derby after breaking COVID-19 protocol.
Edmunson is most likely to leave, in our opinion. However, if we keep him and Katic is loaned out for the season, that would be a solid idea.
Katic missed all of last season with a bad knee injury and in that time, he’s dropped down the pecking order.
As he’s only 24 and should still have plenty of good years ahead of him, it would make sense for him to join a team like Spezia on loan where he could play a full season, get back to full fitness and prove to Gerrard he’s got what it takes to play in the Scottish Premiership again.
