Connor Goldson’s long-term future at Rangers is in doubt

There are supposedly “question marks” over the future of Rangers centre-back Connor Goldson, according to a report from The Athletic.

The 28-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at Ibrox, but the Gers are said to be “relaxed about the situation”. The report states that Rangers are “keen” to give Goldson a new deal but should he run down his contract and leave next summer, they won’t mind too much.

Goldson has been a key player for Rangers and made 56 appearances last season, popping up with eight goals, but it looks like this could be Goldson’s last season at Ibrox.

Should Rangers give Goldson a new deal?

Considering how important the former Brighton & Hove Albion defender has been to Steven Gerrard both on and off the pitch, it seems odd that the club are willing to let him leave next summer for free; especially when last season Gerrard described him as “outstanding” in a press conference [Rangers’ official Twitter page].

The Gers do have quite a few centre-backs and also have young Leon King coming through, but surely Goldson deserves a new deal?

Since Rangers signed him from Brighton, he has made 162 appearances and helped the club win the SPFL last season, playing in all 38 league games.

Therefore, you would think it would be a priority for Rangers to sort out a new contract for Goldson, but that doesn’t appear to be the case yet.

Of course, they still have plenty of time to sort out a new deal for the 28-year-old, and it doesn’t appear as if they will sell him this summer.

Perhaps they are just biding their time and waiting to see what Goldson wants before offering him a new deal?

Either way, for now, Goldson’s long-term future at Ibrox is up in the air, and it could be a while before it is sorted out.

In other Rangers news, the club are keen to keep one particular 24-year-old ace, despite interest from the Premier League.
