Michael Stewart: Craig Gordon can be like Rangers star Allan McGregor
Michael Stewart claims Craig Gordon can do for Hearts what Allan McGregor did for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership next season.
McGregor, 39, was in stunning form to help the Gers win their 55th title, keeping 17 clean sheets in the league.
Hearts won promotion to the Premiership last season and speaking on Premier Sports this week, Stewart claimed Gordon, 38, should aim to make a similar impact in Edinburgh.
“There’s a lot of expectation with the club getting back up to the top-flight,” said Stewart.
“They have to not just be in the top-six but they’ve got to go and challenge for Europe.
“They need to recruit, they need to bring more players in and if they don’t, it puts even more pressure on players like Craig Gordon to have a big season.
“When you look at what Allan McGregor did at Rangers, Craig Gordon can do that for Hearts in terms of winning points for the club.”
Give it a rest, Michael
Hearts have just won promotion back to the Premiership and Stewart is saying they should be trying to qualify for Europe and saying their goalkeeper should do what one of the best goalkeepers in the UK is doing.
McGregor was incredible last season. We genuinely cannot remember a goalkeeper having the season he had in Scottish football or in any kind of football, in all honesty.
Almost every match he played, the Scottish shot-stopper was pulling off a world-class save.
Who’s going to forget that save against Slavia Prague in a hurry?
McGregor was unbelievably good and for Stewart to say that he wants Gordon to get to that level is laughable.
Gordon played 26 times in the Championship last season, conceding 21 goals and keeping 13 clean sheets.
He conceded more goals in the second-tier last season than McGregor did in the top-flight.
They were quite literally in different leagues.
Gordon used to be a half-decent goalkeeper but he turned into a liability for Celtic and had to drop down a division to get his career back on track.
Maybe he will have a good season this year but will he had a season similar to McGregor’s? Absolutely not.
