Alex McLeish reacts to Steven Gerrard rage at Tranmere defeat
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has insisted that Rangers and Steven Gerrard will be calm going into the new season.
The Bears crashed to a 1-0 defeat against Tranmere on Saturday, despite missing numerous chances at Prenton Park.
Gerrard was left fuming with the performance, but McLeish believes that the result means nothing at this early stage of preparations.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “He’s really laid into them.
“They have to take that message on board. I suspect that possibly there are behind Tranmere, and haven’t had as much of a break.
“Listen, pre-season games, you do want to give a good account but you know the players are at one pace and you can see shocks like this.
“Everyone gets palpitations, but it hasn’t started yet.“
Gerrard wouldn’t have been too bothered about the outcome of this one, but more the parts that led to the defeat.
No matter what happens at pre-season level, the basics have to be right, and ducking out of challenges will never be accepted.
The full squad isn’t together yet, with the likes of Glen Kamara not back at Ibrox, and he will get some game time in the next fortnight.
With huge games coming up with Arsenal and Real Madrid, they will tell us everything we need to know about this squad going into our first title defence in over a decade.
