Barry Ferguson: Rangers have sealed bargain of summer with John Lundstram
Barry Ferguson has labelled Rangers signing of John Lundstram as the “bargain of the summer” already in Scotland.
Steven Gerrard persuaded the former Sheffield United man to sign a three-year deal at Ibrox after his contract expired at Bramall Lane.
Ferguson believes that Lundstram would have cost millions if he was in contract and admitted that it sends a message to Celtic and Ange Postecoglou.
Writing in his Daily Record column, Ferguson couldn’t help himself but to wax lyrical of the new signing at Ibrox.
“The signing of John Lundstram on a free transfer from Sheffield United underlines it,” he wrote.
“Believe me when I say, this is a proper football player they’ve just got their hands on and it shows that Gerrard is not allowing anyone at the club to take their eye off the ball.
“Put it this way, he would have commanded a very hefty fee if he was still under contract so it looks very much to me as if Rangers have landed the bargain of the summer already.”
It is hard to argue with Ferguson here, even if we are biased towards Rangers, we just can’t see Celtic or anyone else getting a better deal.
Lundstram was critical to Chris Wilder when the Blades finished in the top half of the Premier League the season before last, with his lung-busting runs from midfield impossible to stop.
Should Gerrard give the midfielder a free rein alongside the likes of Glen Kamara and Steven Davis, he will get chances galore in this Bears side.
Midfield was an area that needed desperately looking at given our injury problems over the past two years, and this being a free deal makes it perfect for the Light Blues.
Ross Wilson won’t be stopping there though and will be looking to add a couple more faces to his squad, and possibly sell a couple before the window is done.
