Rangers midfielder Ben Williamson set for Livingston loan after pre-season role

Rangers midfielder Ben Williamson is set to seal a loan move to Livingston but only after some extra work with Steven Gerrard, according to The Athletic.

The Scottish Sun reported on June 17 that the 19-year-old was closing in on a temporary transfer to Livi in order to gain some top-flight experience.

Williamson left on the first loan spell of his career last season, enjoying a fruitful period at Arbroath in the Scottish Championship, and they praised his “outstanding” contribution on their Twitter account after a game in February.

The Scottish Sun report was nearly three weeks ago and talks had dissipated somewhat, but The Athletic’s Rangers correspondent Jordan Campbell has offered an update on Williamson’s future.

He wrote on The Athletic website that “Williamson is expected to go on loan to Livingston after he has spent some time working with Gerrard’s first team.”

Keeping a close eye

It looks like Rangers and Steven Gerrard have high hopes for Williamson, who was called a “mountain” by Kevin Thomson [Rangers official website].

He was named in the Gers starting XI that played Partick Thistle at Firhill on Monday night [05/07/21], our first match of pre-season.

There was a youthful core to the side with the likes of Lewis Mayo and Leon King joining him, but veteran striker Jermain Defoe was spearheading the attack with Jack Simpson and George Edmundson lining up at the back.

The Light Blues went into half-time with the scores level at 0-0 before making a raft of changes, 10 in total.

Williamson was among those taken off as Cedric Itten scored a second-half winner, but it may not be the teenager’s last appearance of pre-season judging by Campbell’s report on The Athletic website.

Evidently, Gerrard wants to assess him further and integrate him into the first-team surroundings.

That sounds like a sensible move because if all goes well at Livingston in the upcoming campaign, then Williamson may be thrust into first-team action at Rangers next season.

In other Rangers news, the Gers are reportedly in the hunt to sign this EUROs attacker amid Gerrard rave reviews.
