Rangers set to grant Josh McPake loan exit, winger is wanted by five clubs

Rangers winger Josh McPake is likely to be allowed to leave on loan next season with five clubs queuing up for his services, according to the Independent.

The online newspaper claims English sides Morecambe, Doncaster Rovers, Oldham Athletic and Tranmere Rovers all want to sign the 19-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Harrogate Town in League Two.

Scottish interest in McPake comes from Motherwell, and he is set to be granted another temporary spell away from Ibrox for the 2021/21 campaign.

More to prove

McPake is still a teenager learning his way in the game, so it was never likely that he would return to the invincible champions and be able to earn a first-team spot.

The likes of Ryan Kent, Scott Wright and Ianis Hagi are all expected to be vying for starting spots on the wing next season, while Steven Gerrard will surely be eyeing further reinforcements.

That means McPake would surely struggle to gain the valuable minutes on the pitch that he needs at this age.

However, despite his contract expiring in the summer of 2022, as per the Independent’s report, this isn’t necessarily the beginning of the end for McPake.

It was less than two years ago that Rangers first-team coach Michael Beale acclaimed him as a young boy with “a very bright future” on his personal Twitter profile.

McPake made 23 appearances for Harrogate last season, and he scored four goals in League Two, helping them to finish 17th in their first season in the EFL.

Clearly, he is a player with immense potential, but we will be hoping for a lengthy Champions League campaign next season, and we will need a higher-calibre of player that can drive us onto more success.

McPake should be given a new contract and then sent out on another loan to prove his worth once more.
