Chris Sutton wants Rangers' Nathan Patterson starting against England
England host Scotland at Wembley later today in the European Championship and Rangers right-back Nathan Patterson has been tipped to start.
Manager Steve Clarke is expected to continue with his five-man midfield system, and while he started Stephen O’Donnell at right wing-back in the 2-0 loss to the Czech Republic, with James Forrest replacing the Motherwell man, Chris Sutton is tipping him to bring in Patterson.
There have been calls for the 19-year-old to be deployed in the position against the Three Lions, and the Celtic legend has raved about him ahead of the anticipated feisty clash.
“Confident, athletic and a great prospect,” Sutton wrote about the Rangers academy graduate in the Daily Mail.
“This teenager hasn’t played too many times as a wing-back in his career but he won’t be fazed.”
Time to be brave Clarke
Patterson only featured in 14 games across all competitions last term, with the quality of the more experienced skipper James Tavernier preventing him from getting a lot of game time in the Light Blues jersey.
With just one Scotland cap to his name, the Rangers man does not have a lot of experience at this level or any level at that, but has the quality and potential, and that is what matters.
Clarke has to be brave and ring the necessary changes if Scotland are to have any chance of upsetting England tonight, and starting Patterson is simply a must.
Playing the Rangers kid and Andrew Robertson on both wings should cause some trouble for Gareth Southgate’s men.
Raheem Sterling and Kieran Trippier or Luke Shaw are likely to be playing on the left for England, and a player like Patterson is the perfect option to play against them.
He can get up and down the park with ease and cause problems going forward while being solid defensively at the same time.
Sutton and Ally McCoist [The Telegraph] reckon he is the perfect man for the job tonight, and we absolutely agree with them, but does Clarke?
