Alex McLeish delighted by new Rangers contract for Jermain Defoe this week

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has been left delighted by Rangers’ decision to hand Jermain Defoe a new one-year contract at Ibrox this week.

The Bears announced the deal on Tuesday evening and confirmed that the veteran striker would step into a new player-coach role at Auchenhowie.

McLeish believes that will be perfect for the younger attackers under Steven Gerrard, as well as Kemar Roofe and Alfredo Morelos.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “Listen, we tipped it.

“Not that makes anyone a genius, but it seems a good decision from Gerrard to have that man around Ibrox about the young players.

“He has great patience, and anytime I’ve met him, he was always great to talk to, you know that he’s going to impart a lot of secrets to Rangers players, as well as Roofe and Morelos.”

Genius, indeed.

McLeish is spot on, and there won’t be many if any Rangers fans who would disagree.

Defoe proved his class at the end of the last Scottish Premiership season, scoring brilliant individual goals against both Aberdeen and Celtic.

We would even go as far as to say that he is trusted more than the younger likes of Cedric Itten at Ibrox, with the Swiss colossus struggling to get ahead of him in the rankings.

Defoe is here to stay, and there will be many ready to reap the rewards of that.

If possible, expect an even more clinical edge in the final third next season, Defoe is here to impart his wisdom, but also show everyone how it’s done, we can’t wait.
