Perry Groves reckons Rangers' James Tavernier deserves England recognition

Jim White and Perry Groves have asked why Rangers skipper James Tavernier is not being considered by England this summer.

Trent Alexander-Arnold picked up a knock during Wednesday’s friendly against Austria and has been ruled out of action this summer.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate opted to go with four right-backs in his 26-man squad for Euro 2020, but it remains to be seen whether he is keen to replace Alexander-Arnold directly with another full-back.

TalkSport host White has asked why Tavernier has not come into the equation despite being able to put “in a wicked dead ball and scores goals”, and Groves was left wondering too.

“He scores goals. It is a completely different league, don’t get me wrong,” the former Arsenal star said on talkSPORT.

“But he does have that end product and he does score goals. But he has never been in the frame, has he? And that is my point with Trent Alexander Arnold.

“If you are going to take four right-backs, then Gareth Southgate should put another right back in, but he won’t.

Tavernier is good enough for England

The Rangers star ended 2020-21 with 19 goals and 16 assists in all competitions, and not many English players could boast of such numbers last term.

Tavernier scored 17 goals in 2018-19 and is without a doubt one of the best right-backs in Great Britain.

Despite his impressive numbers and performances over the years, playing in Scotland has not done him any favours with the England national team selectors.

The former Newcastle United man will be hoping Rangers can get to the group stages of next season’s Champions League in order to show Southgate what he is capable of.

We know that the Three Lions boss will not be traveling to Scotland to run the rule over Tavernier and other English players anytime soon, but he will likely take note of them if Steven Gerrard’s side are making waves in Europe’s elite competition next term.

It is the only way the Rangers skipper can get recognized by England.
