Derek Rae shares in-depth Twitter verdict as Rangers target Salih Ozcan

Broadcaster Derek Rae has shared an in-depth Twitter thread on FC Koln midfielder Salih Ozcan as Rangers were linked with a summer move.

German outlet Kicker has reported that Steven Gerrard has opened talks over a move for the 23-year-old, but will need players to leave Ibrox first.

Ozcan’s current contract at Koln runs out this summer, and Rae has insisted there is “no prospect” of an extension being agreed.

Rae frequently commentates on Bundesliga football, and it’s fair to say that he hasn’t exactly been impressed with the German youth international.

“First of all, I have watched a lot of Salih Özcan as a commentator and, well, a Köln sympathiser let’s say,” he wrote.

“Right footed central midfielder who often sits deep but can play higher up too. Why is he available? Özcan‘s contract is up and no prospect of an extension.

“He’s looking for the next challenge. He & his Köln teammates avoided relegation on Saturday in the playoff against Kiel.”

This isn’t exactly a thread that leaves us desperate to see Ozcan arrive at Ibrox.

It appears as though Koln had a miserable season in Germany, and the youth international was in and out of that squad after being heavily rotated.

Ozcan was once named in the top 40 best youth talents in the world by FourFourTwo magazine, and it hasn’t transpired like that as his career has progressed.

Nnamdi Ofoborh is one midfielder who is arriving this summer, but he may be sent out on loan yet again after struggling at Bournemouth and Wycombe.

With consistent injuries to the likes of Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack, another midfielder could be needed, but based on this, we may need to widen our search.
