Alex McLeish urges Rangers to sign Siriki Dembele & learn from Celtic's mistakes
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has urged Rangers to take advantage of Peterborough to sign winger Siriki Dembele in the upcoming summer window.
The Ivorian has seen contract talks stall after promotion to the Championship, and the club policy is to transfer list those players.
McLeish believes that the Bears have to learn from Celtic’s mistakes when missing out on the likes of Ivan Toney, as their recruitment fails to catch the eye again.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “Peterborough have produced some revelations.
“Every time I’ve watched them, they have battered opposition defences. Therefore, I think Celtic may have missed out on the likes of Ivan Toney.
“This is why your recruitment has to be spot on. I guess, if Rangers are looking and they have to make sure they are 100% correct – they are a big club with big expectation levels.”
Toney fired over 30 goals for Brentford this season and scored on Saturday as the Bees reached the Premier League for the first time in their history.
Dembele has had similar levels of success at Peterborough this season, being involved in 23 goals from out wide.
Should the likes of Greg Stewart and Jermain Defoe leave Ibrox, Dembele could be the perfect signing for a bargain price given this latest update.
Celtic have a complete rebuild job to do, whereas the Bears can bring in these types of players who will likely start on the bench and look to prove themselves.
McLeish has been impressed with what he has seen from Peterborough, and now is time to take advantage of that.
