Alex McLeish not shocked by Nathan Patterson call-up, makes Alan Hutton comparison
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has compared Rangers defender Nathan Patterson to Alan Hutton after his call up to Scotland’s EURO 2021 squad.
The Ibrox sensation has earned his first senior international call-up as he looks to cement his spot in Steve Clarke’s side for many years to come.
McLeish believes that Scotland finally have options at right-back after years without any, and that can only be positive.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “No, not really.
“We don’t have a lot of right-backs, and you need that competition. Kieran Tierney was played there during Gordon Strachan’s tenure.
“We do need a right-back who is at the top level. O’Donnell has come in, but now there is serious competition with young Patterson.
“He is looking every inch, an Alan Hutton.”
Ally McCoist and Chris Sutton both selected Patterson to start over O’Donnell in that first game with the Czech Republic.
It is critical to win your first game in a major tournament, or you can all-but-wave goodbye to your spot in the competition with two left to play.
Croatia and England are higher seeded than the Czech’s, so getting those three points early could be a great chance to progress.
Patterson will be fearless, and we need players like that.
McLeish knows just how much the Bears sensation has proved himself in the past year at Ibrox, and he is ready to show it on the national stage.
