Rangers intensify contract talks with Jermain Defoe - Sky Sports

Rangers are continuing contract talks with Jermain Defoe this month as his current deal comes to an end at the start of July.

Sky Sports have reported that the Bears are still in contact with the veteran’s representatives, despite things going quiet recently.

Defoe shined towards the end of last season, showing his incredible talent in front of goal against both Celtic and Aberdeen in convincing wins.

Sky Sports have also shared an update from Defoe himself.

The former England international could be close to retirement but has admitted that he would like to play in front of the fans again before doing just that.

Steven Gerrard is a massive fan of his former teammate, and clearly proved he is above Cedric Itten in the pecking order last season.

The 38-year-old only played 42 minutes in May, but still managed to find the back of the net twice, he certainly hasn’t lost it.

Compromise.

This is something that will definitely be needed if a deal is to be struck.

Defoe is on big money at Ibrox, and with his retirement likely coming soon, he will want one last big pay-cheque for the year, and taking a reduced deal in Glasgow may not suit that.

The goals against both Celtic and Aberdeen prove that he still has that killer instinct and composure needed to perform at the highest level.

With the Champions League and desire for domestic cups increasing the competition next season, it would be smart to keep hold of Defoe.

Whether he is willing to do that for much less money? Time will certainly tell.
