Alex McLeish: This is where Rangers need to strengthen in transfer window
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has insisted that Rangers still need to strengthen their squad in the upcoming transfer window.
Despite finishing the Scottish Premiership season as invincible on our way to the 55th title, reinforcements are expected at Ibrox.
McLeish has predicted that Steven Gerrard will target another “top” striker to challenge the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “It’s really difficult to criticise anything that the team have done this season.
“But, at some stage, if Rangers get through to the group stage of the Champions League, they are going to be coming up against some special teams.
“When you think of the players who have come and excelled, these positions are coveted, but you wouldn’t think any of the top guys will be replaced.
“I would still be thinking about another top striker, not to replace anyone, but for someone to come and say they’re coming for your spot.”
Our attack has been incredible over the past season, and Fashion Sakala is already confirmed to arrive ahead of pre-season.
Imagine another top striker on top of that, the Bears would be untouchable.
We would predictably have to get rid of the likes of Jermain Defoe and Greg Stewart, but that would be an easy trade to make with the Champions League coming up.
Much will depend on where Morelos ends up this summer, with interest inevitably coming his and our way from Premier League and European clubs.
