Chris Sutton plays down Rangers achievements, moots Steven Gerrard for Tottenham Hotspur

Chris Sutton has questioned Steven Gerrard’s achievements at Rangers and mooted Tottenham Hotspur as his next destination.

Gerrard has led the Gers to an unbeaten 38-game Premiership season but he could not inspire success in the domestic competitions, failing to reach the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup and League Cup as St Johnstone lifted both trophies.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 live’s 606 programme [18:00,22/05/21], ex-Celtic striker Sutton questioned whether Gerrard has done enough to get a move to Liverpool in a exchange with Robbie Savage.

“What about Steven Gerrard then, where do you think he’ll go next Rob?”, Sutton enquired.

“He hasn’t won a cup yet in Scotland, some may say one trophy out of nine domestically.”

“So are you having a go at Steven Gerrard then?”, Savage replied.

Sutton: “No I’m not, he’s done a brilliant job this season, I’m just stating facts Rob, we deal in facts here.

“I’d be surprised if he got the Liverpool job the next time round, but the way Rangers have performed in Europe has been a real eye-opener.

“But I just wonder whether he’d maybe go to a Spurs or something as a stepping stone, not just a big club like Liverpool.”

Pipe down Sutton

It’s just typical Sutton trying to downplay Gerrard’s achievements at Rangers.

Of course we’d have liked to add a cup to our league success but there’s no denying the sensational job he has done this season.

To go 38 games undefeated in the league is unbelievable, and his old side Celtic have been left in the dust.

Maybe that’s why Sutton is so desperate to link Gerrard with a move away. He’s scared of the Gers gaffer building a dynasty at Ibrox and Celtic being left behind.

Tottenham have a vacancy to fill and they are sure to be interested in Gerrard but we can’t imagine that he would leave Rangers for a side that might not even be playing European football next season.

Rangers will be playing Champions League football next season, something Gerrard has worked so tirelessly to achieve, so he won’t want to walk away from that opportunity.

Liverpool might be his next step later down the line but we think he’s set to stay here for a while longer.
