Government rejected Rangers request for fans to attend Ibrox for trophy presentation

Rangers have been made public enemy number one in Scotland over the last few days after the club and supporters celebrated lifting the Scottish Premiership trophy.

While it was a day meant for celebration, it was marred by ugly scenes of violence across Glasgow and a police investigation into a clip of Gers players allegedly “using a sectarian slur“.

However, it seems that some of the controversy could have been quelled by the Scottish Government had they accepted one of Rangers’ requests for the weekend.

According to PA journalist Andy Newport, the Gers had asked the government if they could allow 10,000 fans into Ibrox to watch the trophy presentation after the win over Aberdeen on Saturday.

It is understood the Gers made the request in a bid to let fans celebrate the trophy lift safely as they seemingly knew that it would be impossible to stop people taking to the streets in huge groups.

Newport has also shared leaked emails between the government and Rangers’ managing director Stewart Robertson, which you can see below:

The government should have known that the massive celebrations were going to take place no matter what and containing a large number safely inside Ibrox would have no doubt gone a long way to helping people stick to social distancing.

Instead, Scotland’s inept government viewed it as black and white, failing to take into consideration that they could have actually done something that would have helped everyone out.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon called Saturday’s scenes in Glasgow “disgraceful” and added she was “utterly disgusted” by what she saw [Daily Record].

It’s funny how if Sturgeon’s government had any competence or even a shred of common sense, then some of the scenes she saw probably wouldn’t have happened.

It was a clever and feasible plan by Rangers, who had their request thrown in their face out of sheer idiocy.

Yet people will continue to point the finger at the club, the club which has absolutely no authority outside the walls of Ibrox.
