Alex McLeish reacts to loss of Borna Barisic for Rangers v Livingston - Exclusive
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has warned Rangers against throwing in a youngster to cover the loss of Borna Barisic against Livingston this evening.
Steven Gerrard has confirmed the Croatian will miss the game at Almondvale, with Calvin Bassey also serving the final game of his suspension.
McLeish believes using a younger talent who may not be ready could damage their progression at Auchenhowie and Ibrox.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “I wouldn’t think he would throw a kid in that wasn’t quite ready.
“That can be a bit damaging if he comes in and has a stinker, but at the same time, I think he’s got the people in his squad who can perhaps do a shift there.
“Whether it’s a left-footer or a right-footer, maybe Rangers have someone within the squad who can play that particular role in comfort.
“The season is all-but-finished, but they still have the goal of finishing unbeaten.”
Gerrard suggested he knows who will plug that gap in his latest press conference, insisting he has asked one of his senior players to swallow his pride and drop into that role.
Whether that be someone along the lines of Steven Davis from midfield, or Scott Wright, who did come on to replace Barisic once he was replaced last time out.
Leon King is a name that has been floated around too, but McLeish appears to have warned Gerrard and the Bears away from that idea.
Livingston away is never easy, but with no recognised left-back in the squad, we will need a big defensive effort to come away with the win tonight.
