Rangers have made enquiry for Newcastle's Jacob Murphy

Rangers have enquired about the availability of Newcastle star Jacob Murphy, according to ChronicleLive.

The report suggests multiple clubs have made an enquiry for the winger, but he could also stay at St. James’ Park.

Murphy’s contract expires at the end of the season but Newcastle will reportedly trigger the option to extend his deal until 2022.

The 26-year-old has only recently won a place in the Newcastle side but he has only made 14 league starts this season.

A lot to like

It is certainly a blow that Newcastle could trigger Murphy’s contract as we feel he could be an asset for Steven Gerrard.

He would provide Premier League experience and knows how to handle the pressure of playing for a big club with huge fan expectation, so would fit in at Ibrox.

Murphy can play up and down the right-hand side too, with The Times journalist Henry Winter describing his performance against Tottenham at right wing-back last month as “outstanding”, via Twitter.

He is also blessed with pace, clocking a top speed of 36.5 km/h this term, which is the fourth highest speed of any player in the Premier League in 2020/21, per Sky Sports.

The thought of him and James Tavernier bombing down the wing together is an enticing prospect.

We must make sure we are ready to offer him terms if Newcastle do not extend his deal, as he is capable of flourishing in the SPFL.

A return of 1.6 dribbles and 1.4 tackles per game this year [WhoScored] shows how well-rounded Murphy is, and he could be useful in games where Gers need to be defensive, such as in the Champions League.

If we fail to land him we hope the club targets a similar option, particularly someone who shares Murphy’s versatility.
