Steven Gerrard says Rangers and Jermain Defoe have opened contract talks
Steven Gerrard has stated that Rangers have opened contract talks with veteran striker Jermain Defoe as his current deal runs out at the end of the season.
The English striker may not have played every game for the Gers this season, but has been there whenever Gerrard’s needed to call upon his services off the bench.
He brings the experience of playing against some of the best players in the world, which would certainly rub off on the younger members of the squad.
It now appears that he’s could stay on at the club at least for the next season, which will be Rangers’ first in the Champions League under Gerrard.
According to Sky Sports, he said, “He’s been a wonderful player. He’s had a wonderful career.
“To get him up here in the first place was something I was keen to do, because I knew he would help the group in the way he goes about his business. He’s a top professional.
“We’re in talks with Jermain at the moment about what’s next for Jermain. But we want to be really respectful, we want to give him the time to make his own decisions.”
The 38-year-old has been an important squad player, but his off-field presence is something that Gerrard certainly admires.
He sets an example in training with his intensity and fitness in comparison to his age. He’s got experience of playing in the Premier League and Europe, which can only come in handy when one’s viewed as the model individual at a football club.

Defoe has been linked with a return to Sunderland should the Black Caps seal promotion and also considered taking up a coaching role.
It will be interesting to see in the coming weeks what transpires because Gers fans and Gerrard would undoubtedly have him on the books for another season.
He’s still got goals in him, scoring in injury time against Celtic over the weekend, so there’s no denying that he could play a part in the first team.
