Josh McPake eyes summer talks on Rangers future

Rangers youngster Josh McPake is prepared for crunch talks over his future in the summer after a successful loan spell away from the club.

McPake, 19, joined English League Two side Harrogate Town in January on a temporary deal until the end of the season and he has scored four goals in 23 league appearances, ahead of this weekend’s final fixture of the campaign at Cheltenham Town.

The winger’s Gers contract expires in 2022 [Transfermarkt] and speaking to the PA news agency, in quotes reported by the Scottish Sun who claim English clubs are monitoring him, McPake expects discussions with Rangers when he returns in the summer.

He said: “I’ve got a year left on my contract at Rangers and coming down to England has been a great experience but also exposed me to a new market as clubs are always watching the games in League Two.

“Rangers have kept a close eye on me and I really appreciate it. It’s good to know they are still looking after me so I will be back in for pre-season and I’m sure we will have some conversations about the future.

“They’ve told me to keep doing what I’m doing.”

Sign up and ship off

McPake only turns 20 in the summer so it feels way too early to make a definitive judgment on his Ibrox future.

Clearly he would struggle to get regular minutes for the Light Blues next season, with the likes of Ryan Kent, Ianis Hagi and Scott Wright all expected to be in competition with each other for a spot on the wings.

But McPake has shown enough promise to suggest he could have a role in the future, with four goals since January showing his eye for goal as he’s helped Harrogate to EFL safety.

It’s certainly gone better than his loan spell at Greenock Morton in the first half of the season, where his six league outings included one red card.

A move to a lower Scottish Premiership side could be a smart next move for him, or another loan to a side in the EFL, perhaps in the Championship or League One.

But we should be signing him up on a new deal before we let him leave again, to protect his value and ensure he can’t leave on a free next summer.
