Joseph Okumu has shared his ambitions for the future and provided an update on a potential transfer amid recent links to Rangers.
Swedish outlet Fotbollskanlen reports the Gers are interested in the Elfsborg defender along with Napoli, Valencia and Nice.
But Okumu has made it clear that he will not just join any top team, suggesting playing style and the project at a club will be more important in determining where he ends up.
He told Fotbollskanlen, “The Swedish league is a springboard for all players. If you do it well, hopefully the right opportunity arises.
“If the right option emerges, I definitely want to take the next step.
“It depends on the project. It’s not just about going to a top league or a top team. It’s all about where I can go and develop, where my playing style fits and where I can make an impression.
“I’m not just moving to move. It is important to see the bigger picture. It’s the dream all players have.”
Rangers can entice Okumu to Ibrox because we are a big club and we have a very good project in place under Steven Gerrard.
The Gers boss is into his fourth year at Auchenhowie now and it is clear that he has helped the club progress, and perhaps more importantly for Okumu, the players too.
The bigger question is if Okumu would improve Rangers, and the interest in him from around Europe certainly indicates he could be a good find.
His stats also shed a positive light on the 23-year-old.
Per WyScout, in 2021 Okumu has achieved an incredible 7.8 interceptions and won five defensive duels per game.
A return of 3.2 clearances per 90 mins means he could slot in well alongside Filip Helander or Connor Goldson so he could be worth bringing in.
And with only a year remaining on his current contract he could be available for a bargain price, so we are keen for the club to swoop early in order to beat other interested parties to his signature.
