Rangers are interested in Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence

Rangers are in the hunt to sign Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence, according to ESPN.

Wolves are believed to be leading the race for the 20-year-old but Gers are also interested, along with Everton.

And with Middlesbrough reportedly open to offers in excess of £5million plus add-ons, it is very possible he will make a summer switch.

Tottenham were said to be keen too as Jose Mourinho is an admirer of Spence, but his departure means they could be out of the running.

A strange target

Spence has made 37 appearances this season in the English Championship so clearly has talent.

To impress Boro manager Neil Warnock takes more than that though, so we have no doubt Spence could be a big prospect.

It is nice to see us linked with him, but there is one major problem – he is a right-back.

James Tavernier is the best right-back in the division and he is our captain too, so we cannot see him being replaced anytime soon.

And if he is to lose his spot, Nathan Patterson is ready-made to take his place in the side.

The Scot has impressed for Gers this year and is younger than Spence, so signing the EFL star would come at a detriment to Patterson’s development.

It would be a strange move, therefore, unless we plan on buying Spence while he is still cheap before selling him on.

Even that carries a big risk so it is difficult to envisage the defender making a move to Ibrox this summer.
