Kris Boyd believes Rangers would be better off with Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard, despite calling the Ibrox favourite ‘brilliant’.
Edouard is the Scottish Premiership’s top scorer this season with 16 goals, four ahead of nearest challenger Kevin Nisbet and five ahead of Gers duo Morelos and James Tavernier.
In an interview with Sky Sports, ex-Rangers striker Boyd selected seven of Steven Gerrard’s title-winning side in his team of the season, but opted to omit Morelos in favour of the Celtic forward.
“There is no getting away from the fact Odsonne Edouard is the best striker in the league,” he said.
“I’d always have the top goal scorer in my team. What Alfredo Morelos does for Rangers is brilliant but if Edouard was in that team, Rangers would be beating teams 3-0 or 4-0 every week.”
More clinical? Wrong
Well, the stats don’t exactly back up Boyd’s big claim.
He’s convinced that Edouard would get more goals than Morelos in Gerrard’s set-up, but is the Frenchman actually a better finisher?
According to Wyscout Edouard is underperforming his xG by 0.14 in the Premiership this season, double the Colomban’s total of 0.07.
That flies in the face of Boyd backing him to batter teams at Rangers.
Morelos also trumps him for fouls suffered (1.88 versus 1.02) so he is a more valuable source of respite.
Edouard is clearly a decent player, but would we take him over Morelos? Not a chance.
El Buffalo has proven himself in the knock-out stages of the Europa League, something his Old Firm rival is yet to do.
He’s one of our most important players, and to suggest taking him out for Edouard would improve our Premiership standing is nonsensical.
Not only are his goals crucial to our success, but his work rate is also on a different level to the Celtic striker who can often be found lacking in that department.
Boyd’s got this one wrong here.
